And we were simultaneously working on the pre-production process, so it was quite manic.” From its initiation, it took nearly two years to get to the final version. “Finally, a friend, Sarah Koshy, came home and worked for two weeks on the final draft. Gathering all their thoughts and feedback, Kanika observes, was useful even if it was time-consuming because it helped her understand how different minds work.
Some of them were my friends, some were people I was meeting for the first time.” I invited people at different intervals to read a copy of the script. The writing took a long time, it took months of editing. I spent most of my holiday writing because I felt inspired, a lot of it just came to me. The first thing I did was download a screenwriting software and start working on it. “I began writing the film while on holiday. It created an impact.”įollowing the online campaign, Kanika started a crowd-funding campaign for the film, which brought in support from over 160 people from across the world. When it went viral, a lot of people called from around the world to say it inspired them to call their fathers or take care of them.
Over 30 people came home and recorded their views, that is what led toĬall Dad Now. “That is why, before we began, a friend suggested that we meet some fathers and daughters to understand what their relationships are like. She points out that this is the first time she has ever directed or written a film. It was even more special for me to be able to do this with my father because he has always wanted to act in a film.” I thought it would be nice to take up the challenge of working on film. Both dad and I have been actively involved in theatre all our lives. I was yearning to do something creative again. “The film was also a sort of release from my manic lifestyle. She is known for her learning and development venture, Outperform. Kanika, a lawyer turned entrepreneur, began her foray into the field of performing arts as a child, after her father wrote and directed a musical in which she starred. It holds true as much for parents as it does for children,” says Kanika, who has written, directed and starred in the film with her father. The crux of the film is that parents and children need to spend that time now, say what they want to tell each other. The bottomline is that we are so busy growing up that we often forget our parents are growing old.
The film was an innocent plan to spend more time with my father. “It is a one hour 40-minute, entertaining feature with a message. The film’s trailer also won the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Calcutta International Cult Film Festival. The film, set to release on April 20, has won acclaim at film festivals around the world including the Best First Feature at the World of Film International Festival in Glasgow. It was just a few years ago that the campaign to Call Dad Now (#TellHimNow) went viral on social media.
